Walk Where History Was Made.
The Fayette Street African American
History Walking Tour
For nearly a century, Fayette Street was the heartbeat of Black Martinsville. It was where a community built its own hospitals, banks, schools, churches, and businesses, not despite the obstacles placed in front of them, but in full defiance of them. This self-guided walking tour takes you through 11 historic sites along one of the most significant stretches of African American history in the Commonwealth of Virginia. You will hear the stories in the voices of the people who lived them.
